the Healy Settlement

The "Healy Settlement" is located about 7 to 10 miles east of Atlanta, Missouri and about 15 miles north-northeast of Macon, Missouri. The "Healy Settlement", had no political boundary or definition. It was an arbitrary socio-religious community. Its nucleus consisted of the property of six Irish-catholic Healy families, later joined by the Dutch-catholic John Mettes family. These families were later joined by other catholic families such as the Latchford and Lynch families. Through their faith and diligence these families established St. Joseph Parish in their community. Through marriage, these families were eventually entwined and as religious stresses between Catholics and Protestants waned, the identity of the "Haley Settlement" waned and disappeared. St. Joseph Parish also passed into history leaving only a few graves and tombstones to mark its location.
