Nettie Mettes was born on the Healy
Settlement in 1869 as the youngest of the seven children of John Mettes and
Gesina
Holofskopl. Approximately 1871, Nettie died of membranous croup,
known today as Diphtheria. At the time of Nettie’s short
life, many families lost children to the dreaded ailment. Nettie was
buried Nettie, "about ˝ a quarter up the north road, in a fence row
on the west side of the road". Later, a family traveling
through with their children and possessions in a covered wagon,
stopped at the Mettes home with a sick child. The child died
and was buried beside Nettie. |
