John Mettes (1829 - 10 Mar 1917) John in uniform

The name J Mettes is written under the photo, also the letters Bal, indicating that the photo was taken in Baltimore, Maryland. Interestingly, the year 1856 is also written on the photo. It is likely that the 5 and the 6 changed places and that the actual year was 1865. This is probably a juxtaposition error that can be blamed on the different ways in which the year 1865 is pronounced in Dutch ("achtien-honderd vijf en zestig") and in English ("eighteen-hundred sixty five").
