Jan Pietersz. Mettes was bapt. in Wognum 19 nov 1773, and died in Hoorn 14 jun 1846. Jan married in Wognum on 19 apr 1794 to Geertje Willemse Stam (Grietje) bapt. Berkhout 20 feb 1777, died 17 Apr 1850 Hoorn. Geertje was a daughter of Willem Gerritsz Stam and Grietje Pietersdr Dekker.

The above signatures are of Jan Mettes and his son Jacob Mettes, as they appeared on the wedding certificate of Jan's son Willem Mettes and his first wife Geertje Beers. Note that the 1830 Census says that Jan Mettes was born in Berkhout, NOT Wognum, but this is the same place. Interestingly, the register of the Rooms Katholieke Kerk of St.Hieronymus in Wognum had celebrated at 4 May 1794 the marriage of Jan Pieterz METTENS and Geertje Willemse Stam. This church wedding took place quite a few days after their marriage was registered. The name METTENS is most likely an error, which just shows how easily the name Mettes gets changed!
