Abstract:
This article is linked to the other December 1997 article, called Why online services will continue to be free!.
The article looks at specific examples of free services, where it's rather obvious that
the fact that such services are free has contributed hugely to their success.

Originally, this article looked at specific examples of free services.
Predictably, details of many such services have become outdated - the web
continues to change rapidly.
Therefore, the text of this article has been removed, to avoid people
following obsolete links. But what remains the case is that the web is
largely free and that offering free information and services is what makes the web tick.
